Preakness Stakes: Biographies Posted: Thursday May 15, 2003 11:59 AMUpdated: Saturday May 17, 2003 1:45 PM BALTIMORE, Maryland (Reuters) -- Following are biographies for the 10 runners in the Saturday's Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown, to be run at Pimlico racecourse: CHEROKEE'S BOY
Attempting to become the first Maryland-bred to win the Preakness since 1983. Six victories from 12 career starts, with earnings of US$414,929. Trainer Capuano's second tilt at the Preakness after 1997 when he saddled third-place finisher Captain Bodgit. Cherokee's Boy yet to show he is that good. Local jockey was Eclipse Award winning apprentice last season. FOUFA'S WARRIOR
Never out of the placings in five career starts and impressive in training at his Laurel Park home base. Distant third in Illinois Derby, however. Venezuelan jockey was the leading rider in North America in 2001 with 431 victories. FUNNY CIDE
KISSIN SAINT
First Triple Crown starter for the colt's trainer and a victory would mark her first Grade I triumph. Reasonable chance on form after third-place finish behind Kentucky Derby runner-up Empire Maker and Derby winner Funny Cide earlier in the season. MIDWAY ROAD
First to arrive at the track on Tuesday. Trainer has a 100 percent record in the Preakness having won it in 1990 with Summer Squall, his only other runner. Big step up in class for Midway Road but horse is an improving sort. NEW YORK HERO
Aqueduct-based, Maryland-bred colt. Scored his big win of the year when he captured the Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park to put himself in line for a trip to the Kentucky Derby, but a poor run after Turfway ruled him out of Churchill Downs , connections preferring to wait for the Preakness. PEACE RULES
The Kentucky Derby third-place finisher continues to do well and trainer Frankel hopes to end a winless run in Triple Crown events in an otherwise glittering career. Horse is game and consistent and jockey Prado vastly experienced. The Preakness will mark Peace Rule's eighth different track in 10 career starts. Beat Funny Cide in the Louisiana Derby and holds every chance. SCRIMSHAW
Owners have enjoyed huge success in Triple Crown events including victories in the Preakness three times since 1995. One of two runners along with Ten Cents A Shine for D. Wayne Lukas who has won the Preakness five times. Horse was only 11th in the Kentucky Derby behind Ten Cents A Shine who was eighth. Both expected to do better but may have their work cut out to catch Funny Cide and Peace Rules. SENOR SWINGER
Another runner for owners who have enjoyed six Triple Crown race winners in all since the early 1990s. The grey/roan runner is coming into the Preakness off a two and a half length victory in the Grade III American Turf at Churchill Downs on May 2. Jockey has five Preakness wins to his credit and trainer has won the race four times since 1997, including last year with War Emblem. TEN CENTS A SHINE
Eighth in the Kentucky Derby. Owners optimistic of a place despite defeat at Churchill Downs. Trainer knows all there is to know about winning big races and can never be ignored. Saddling his 29th Preakness runner on Saturday, 10 more than any other trainer has achieved.
