Bondra eyeing Canada

Inside the NHL - Alan Adams

Peter Bondra of the Washington Capitals has nixed a deal that would have sent him to the Montreal Canadiens for Danius Zubrus.

But Bondra hasn't turned his back on Canada. He'd like nothing more than to wind up in Ottawa or Toronto, which he feels would suit his style of play, but it's doubtful he'll get his wish.

Rumors and loose ends

Speaking of the Maple Leafs, you can trash the rumor of the three-way deal between Toronto, Chicago and Phoenix that would have been disgruntled Leaf defenseman Alex Karpovtsev end up in Chicago, Bryan McCabe make his way to the Arizona desert and Jyrki Lumme become a Maple Leaf. Lumme has a no-trade clause and he's not heading north. ...One of the members of Marty McSorley's legal team is Paul Kelly, who just happens to be the former U.S. Justice Department prosecutor who put ex-union boss Alan Eagleson behind bars (albeit for a cup of coffee). You don't suppose it is payback time for the favors McSorley, a former member of the union executive, served up did during Kelly's pursuit of Eagleson. ...The NHLPA is expected to challenge John Grahame's suspension by the Boston Bruins for breaking his ankle in an off-ice incident. Grahame is expected to be out for three months and the Bruins have vowed not to pay him. Given that Grahame was to make $550,000, the Bruins will save about $200,000. Maybe Harry Sinden plans on using the money to sign Anson Carter. ...People in the hockey world are wondering who will replace player Mike Barnett as the head of IMG's hockey division when, as expected, he becomes general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes. Barnett and Wayne Gretzky are joined at the hip and the feeling is Barnett will accept an invitation from Gretzky to join the Coyotes. ...Whatever happened to freedom of speech? Nashville captain Tom Fiztgerald has been warned to pick his words more carefully when he criticizes the team's play. That means no more "We stunk" or "We sucked" when Fitzgerald is asked about why the Predators lost. ...Washington coach Ron Wilson agreed to a contract extension, although it hasn't been announced as yet. ...There are six NHL teams in Canada and not a one has a captain born in the land of the frozen north. There are three Swedes ( Mats Sundin in Toronto, Daniel Alfredsson in Ottawa and Markus Naslund in Vancouver), one Finn (Montreal's Saku Koivu ), one American (Edmonton's Doug Weight ) and one Irishman ( Steve Smith of Calgary, who was raised in Canada). ...Vancouver's identical twins, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, made their home-ice debut Tuesday. They had an identical 20 shifts and near-identical ice time. Henrik played 18 minutes, 14 seconds and Daniel 18:18. ...It didn't take Rob Blake long to change his mind about being captain of the L.A. Kings. He resigned the post this past week in a huff over a contract dispute. Blake had the C on his jersey on Tuesday when the Kings played host to the Phoenix Coyotes.

Alan Adams covers hockey for the National Post in Toronto and is a regular contributor to CNNSI.com.
