  Alan Shipnuck

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck offers his take on what people are talking about this week in the world of golf.

1. Payne Stewart. Always the contrarian, I knew he'd make that putt on 18, just to spite all the golfwriters who were rooting against him.

2. Phil Mickelson. Too bad Amy didn't beep him before those putts on 16 and 17.

3. Tiger Woods. Another near miss for young Tiger, which leaves him crowing about moral victories. Whatever happened to actual victories?

4. David Duval. The world No. 1 blows up with a disastrous 75-75 weekend. His handlers are always talking about trying to humanize him, but this probably isn't what they had in mind.

5. Pinehurst No. 2. The Donald Ross masterwork gets rave reviews in its first Open. I haven't heard this much enthusiastic talk about mounding since the SI swimsuit issue came out.

6. Se Ri Pak. The one-time prodigy wins her first tournament of the year in a dominant performance at the ShopRite Classic. Thus ending the worst sophomore slump since Milli Vanilli.

7. Tom Lehman. After four straight years of heartbreak at the Open, Lehman finishes a quiet T23. I'm sure he would rather have his heart broken again.

8. Miguel Angel Martin. While all of the top European players are at the Open, he wins the Euro Tour's Moroccan Open. He's still standing by the 18th green, waiting for Seve to call.

9. José María Olazábal. The Masters champ couldn't break 75 at Pinehurst, so he broke his hand instead, punching a wall in frustration. Too bad he didn't punch ...

minus-10. John Daly. Let's get this straight: Wrong John has let himself get fatter than Jabba the Hutt; he six-putts as a form of preparation for the Open; admits during the national championship to losing $9 million while gambling; sleepwalks through an 81-83 weekend at Pinehurst, including an absurd incident where he petulantly strikes his own moving ball; and then he rips the USGA for not upholding the integrity of the game. Earth to John: We don't care if you've got more demons than Linda Blair; get your life in order or get the hell off the PGA Tour.
