The Hot List Posted: Monday February 28, 2000 10:08 AM
Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world. 1. Darren Clarke. The biggest rear end this side of Jennifer Lopez -- and, apparently, a heart to match. 2. Tiger Woods. The winless streak hits three tournaments. Somewhere, Tim Finchem is reaching for the Pepto. 3. Karrie Webb. With a win at the Australian Masters she remains undefeated in the 21st century. A couple more victories and she may get more than one paragraph in the Monday papers. 4. Notah Begay. In the wake of his second DUI he begins a one-week jail sentence today. Has been hailed as a hero for accepting responsibility for his actions, but isn't that what you're supposed to do? 5. The World Golf Championships begin Year 2 with a bang. Maybe Finchem actually knew what he was doing. 6. Tom Wargo. The best hair in the business -- and, after five long years, a silver trophy to match. 7. Curtis Strange. Think walking 36 holes in the mud is tiring? Try listening to the Mouth of the South. Somehow managed to cover five days of match play with one run-on sentence. 8. The West Coast. Noah didn't see this much rain, but these were eight weeks to savor: Tiger-Ernie Els going toe-to-toe at the Mercedes, 'Zinger raising the dead in Hawaii, the shot of the century at Pebble (O.K., O.K., I know it's only been two months), Phil Mick sacking up to end The Streak, and then a rousing Match Play. It's already been a great season, and the Masters is still six weeks away. 9. Jim Carter. The journeyman gets his first career victory at the Tucson Open. This brings up two questions: 1) Who is Jim Carter? 2) There was a tournament in Tucson this week? minus-10. Davis Love III. Has won once since October 1997, and is somehow still the fourth seed at the Match Play. Then, with a chance to live up to his outsized reputation, he lays not one egg but two in losing to Woods and David Duval. Once thought of as the second coming of Iron Byron; a better comparison may be to the Tin Man. Don't forget to check out Alan's new column, On Tour, posting each
Wednesday.
