The Hot List Posted: Monday March 13, 2000 12:30 PM
Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world. 1. Annika Sorenstam. The Queen is dead, long live the Queen. Pat Hurst is no Karrie Webb, but give Annika credit for not backing off after the previous week's playoff debacle. The Hot List promises to make nice (at least until Webb steps on her neck again). 2. Brian Gay's penalty stroke. Only in golf. Ain't it great? 3. Hubert Green. The contentious Alabaman shot a final-round 62 to vroom to victory at the Audi Senior Classic. Unconfirmed reports pouring in that he smiled for the first time since 1973. 4. Dudley Hart. Volcano Jr. held his temper in check long enough to cruise off with the Honda Classic championship. An inspiration to anyone who has ever felled a eucalyptus with his putter. 5. Rolf Muntz. The wonderfully named journeyman from the Netherlands won the Euro tour's Qatar Masters, becoming the first Dutchman to score -- a W, that is -- since 1947. Thus consigning himself to eternity as a useless trivia question. 6. Aaron Baddeley. The 18-year-old amateur from Australia made his PGA Tour debut at Honda, contending for two rounds on the strength of his awesome all-around game. Brace yourself for another 25 years of thunder from Down Under. 7. Jim Furyk. A week after winning at Doral he nearly stole another victory. Maybe it's time for an instructional video on The Loop. 8. Casey Martin. The Supreme Court darling makes another cut -- and wins his court case. Mr. Finchem, would you like some salsa to go with that egg on your face? 9. The Masters. It's officially less than a month away. That's the real reason Tiger has taken these last two weeks off -- to rearrange his closets in anticipation of more green formal wear. minus-10. The Florida swing. You can see more stars on a smoggy night in L.A.Thank Arnie this week brings Bay Hill, where Tiger and at least a couple others among the glitterati will turn out, only to honor the King.
