  Inside Golf - Alan Shipnuck

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world. Chat with Alan Thursday, April 20 at 1 p.m. ET.

HOT

1. Seve Ballesteros. No. 590 in the World Ranking, Seve slays Colin Montgomerie in singles to lead Europe over Britain and Ireland in the inaugural Seve Ballesteros Trophy. The most unexpected revival since Glenn Close popped out of the bathtub at the end of Fatal Attraction.

2. Stewart Cink. He gets his second career win at Hilton Head. A victory for tall, goofy guys everywhere.

3. Juli Inkster. She defends her championship at the Longs Drugs Challenge. The nicest soccer mom in the world, and one of golf's most cutthroat competitors.

4. Doug Tewell. The senior gets his first victory in 13 years. Now we can stop spelling his name T-O-O-L.

5. Kent Jones. The good news: He goes 15 under to win the Buy.com Shreveport Open. The bad news: He's 33, and this is the first W of his career.

NOT

1. Ernie Els. A few years ago he was the most ruthless closer in golf. Now he's Cink's whipping boy. Ernie, we hardly knew ye.

2. Monty. The single most eloquent argument against the World Rankings. He's never won in the States, regularly throws up on himself in the majors, and yet somehow he's the No. 3. Yeah, in much the same way Marge Schott is the third most beautiful woman in the world.

3. Cleveland Golf. As you no doubt know from the avalanche of ads, its big endorser, Vijay Singh, won the Masters. Too bad he was using a Mizuno driver.

4. Rich Beem. After missing seven cuts in a row, the likeable second-year pro out of El Paso finally makes a cut in Hilton Head ... and then gets run over by an out-of-control golf cart on the 9th hole Sunday, forcing him to WD and sending him to the hospital. This is progress?

5. PGA Seniors' Championship. Hale Irwin WDs from the rain-delayed Monday finish in favor of a charity event in St. Louis. In other words, from one meaningless exhibition to the next.
