The Hot List Posted: Monday May 01, 2000 06:30 PM
Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world. HOT 1. Robert Allenby. Out of the water, over the grandstand, nothing but net. The lanky Aussie takes Houston in a most unusual manner. 2. Sophie Gustafson. Let's see, she's 5'8", Swedish, rides a motorcycle, just won her first career tournament with a shockingly entertaining final round ... I think I'm in love. 3. John Jacobs. Loved that bit with the cigar during the playoff. Bonus points for preventing another stupefying Gil Morgan champion's press conference. 4. The Callaway ERC driver. Too hot for the USGA, but Eduardo Romero seems to like it, as he rode the trampoline effecto to a tie for third at the Open de España. Everywhere but here golfers are trying to explain to their wives why an extra 10 yards is worth $900. 5. Stuart Appleby. Maybe the classiest guy in golf -- he couldn't defend his Houston Open title, so he walked four holes of a playoff to cheer on his buddy Allenby. Gotta love it. NOT 1. The PGA Tour. The two months between the Masters and U.S. Open are always Dullsville, but for sheer low-wattage boredom, you simply can't beat the Greensboro-Houston-New Orleans stretch we're currently suffering through. Makes me pine for something exciting, like curling. 2. Craig Stadler. The clutchest display of playoff putting since Scott Hoch at the '89 Masters. 3. Colin Montgomerie. One shot out of the lead heading into the final round in Spain, he lets another tournament get away, remaining 0-for-'00. Monty has almost turned into a sympathetic underdog. Almost. 4. Sergio Garcia. Consecutive double bogeys ensures yet another final-round fade, leaving the former Boy Wonder still searching for a W. When they said he would be the next Seve, I thought they meant circa early '80s, not late '90s. 5. Kelly Robbins. The onetime darling of American golf blows another tourney at the Chick-fil-A, pushing her winless streak to nearly a year and a half. We know Robbins doesn't like reporters, but this is a bizarre way to avoid having to do interviews. Don't forget to check out Alan's new column, On Tour, posting each Wednesday.
