  Inside Golf - Alan Shipnuck

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world.

HOT

1. Carlos Franco. Pedro Almodóvar speaks better English, but no matter. This rakish Paraguayan may be the most entertaining player in golf.

2. Colin Montgomerie. Two back-nine eagles on Sunday lift Monty to his first W of the season, at the Open de France. As usual, Montgomerie is tuning up his game in time to blow the U.S. Open.

3. Laura Davies. She cruises to victory by leaving her oft-wayward driver in the bag. Gee, too bad it's taken her only 15 years to figure this out.

4. Bruce Fleisher. He leaves the bedside of his dying father and then roars to victory, inspired all the way by the old man's pep talk. Heroic stuff.

5. Blaine McCallister. Sure, he threw up all over himself in the playoff, but just getting there was an accomplishment for a 41-year-old who hasn't won in seven years. Like Fleisher, Blaine Mac is such a sincere, nice guy he earns a one-time exemption from Hot List sniping.

NOT

1. 40-year-olds in sudden death playoffs. First the Walrus, then McCallister -- I beg you, confiscate these guys' putters before somebody gets hurt.

2. The LPGA Tour. The best player in women's golf, Karrie Webb, puts together another dominating victory ... in Japan. No film at 11.

3. Harrison Frazar. The likeable young pro out of Texas played spectacularly on the weekend, only to lose the Compaq with one bad swing at the 71st hole. Further evidence why golf, spelled backwards, is flog.

4. Mark O'Meara. Unable to compete on the PGA Tour any longer, he takes his roadshow to Macau this week. No comment necessary.

5. This space left blank, in memory of O'Meara's double dip in the majors in 1998.
