The Hot List Posted: Tuesday May 16, 2000 12:08 PM
Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world. HOT 1. Jesper Parnevik. Busts into the top 10 in the World Ranking with a stirring playoff victory at the Nelson, his eighth top-10 in 12 Tour starts. Sadly, the USGA has just ruled his pink pants are non-conforming, as they trampoline on all standards of good taste. 2. José María Olazábal. Perennial Hot List favorite gets his first European tour victory since '98, at the Dubai Desert Classic. Congrats, José, and only one question: Can you please explain how Dubai is part of the Euro tour? 3. Pat Hurst. She gets her first W since a long, pregnancy-induced absence, on Mother's Day no less. Kinda makes those flowers I got my mom seem a little lacking. 4. Tiger Woods. The comeback kid puts together the lowest final-round score of his career, nearly stealing the Nelson. One more reminder that the next time Woods takes a four-week vacation the PGA Tour should simply declare a moratorium on Robert Allenbys and cancel all programming. 5. Butch Harmon. Took a red-eye from Vegas over the weekend to help TW sort out his swing, and sent him out to play on Sunday by saying, clairvoyantly, "See ya on the driving range before the playoff." Now, Butch, about my portfolio ... NOT 1. Padraig Harrington. The scrappy Irishman had a five-shot lead heading into the final round at Dubai ... and then was DQ'd for failing to sign his scorecard on Saturday. We know golfers don't like signing autographs, but this is getting ridiculous. 2. Davis Love III. What is there to say that hasn't already been said here at the Hot List? Once a tragic hero, DL3 is now looking simply tragic. 3. David Duval. After getting blown away by Tiger on Sunday, Duval took BP with the Texas Rangers Monday. Considering his year-long slump, our advice to Duval: stick to the balls that are standing still. 4. Phil Mickelson. Needed only to par the 72nd hole for his third W of the season; instead, bogeyed and became playoff roadkill. Out of respect for the entire Mickelson family, I shall refrain from comment. 5. Hale Irwin. Even when he wins he can't top Bruce Fleisher: While Hale got a W at the Nationwide, Fleisher was winning over in Ireland. Wake me when they sort this Senior tour rivalry thing out.
