The Hot List: May 30 Posted: Wednesday May 31, 2000 04:27 PM
Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world. HOT 1. Kathy Ireland. And not just for the obvious reasons. This week the former SI swimsuit model hosts the LPGA's tournament in South Carolina. 2. Tiger. Even Mother Nature can't stop the kid: His rain-delayed victory at the Memorial is the first time he has successfully defended a title, and, incredibly, his 29th top-10 in his past 34 tournaments worldwide. 3. Betsy King. The Hall of Famer gets her 33rd career victory at the Corning Classic, winning her eighth career playoff. Pretty cutthroat for a woman who spends much of her free time helping Romanian orphans. 4. Larry Nelson. Shades of the '83 U.S. Open: He slays Tom Watson down the stretch. Only this time it's at something called the Boone Valley Classic. On the Senior tour. Driving a cart. Hey, a victory is a victory. Right? 5. Justin Leonard. With a strong final round he finishes T2 at the Memorial, his first top-five since last September. Let's see, didn't he turn into a national hero at the Ryder Cup, also last September? Must be just a coincidence. NOT 1. Kelli Kuehne. Two up with one to play at the Corning Classic, she pulls a mini-Van de Velde and takes double bogey at the last, then loses the playoff. At least she kept her socks on. 2. Tom Watson. Needing a birdie on the last hole to force a playoff at Boone Valley he rinses his approach instead, dooming him to a second consecutive runner-up finish. At least he's not residing on milk cartons, à la the other supposedly super Seniors, Tom Kite and Lanny Wadkins. 3. Titleist. Tiger Woods is on the verge of abandoning its ball in favor of the new Nike rock. Would be the biggest departure since Roger Waters left Pink Floyd. Or something like that. 4. David Duval. First his clothing company, Mossimo, goes belly up, and now Colin Montgomerie is on the verge of bumping him from No. 2 in the World Ranking. What's next? A piano falling from the sky? 5. Colin Montgomerie. Monty wins the PGA! Monty wins the PGA! What's that? It's the Euro PGA? Well, then, that explains it. Don't forget to check out Alan's new column, On Tour, posting each Wednesday.
