  Inside Golf - Alan Shipnuck

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world.

HOT

1. Lee Trevino. With a brazen shot on the last hole at the Cadillac NFL Classic, the 60-year-old Merry Mex ended a 27-month winless slump. Good thing, too, because the Senior tour desperately needs more Trevino press conferences.

2. Juli Inkster. Scrapped her way to a successful defense at the McDonald's LPGA Championship, the sixth major championship of an illustrious career. So how come Betsy King gets all the Romanian endorsements?

3. Notah Begay. Punctuated an emotional year with a stirring victory in Memphis, the third of his career and first since high-profile DUI. Here's hoping Begay celebrates Indy 500 style -- with a lot of milk.

4. Lee Westwood. The English lad wins again, this time at home, at the European Grand Prix. Bored? Desperate for cocktail-party banter? Try figuring out who is currently the top European -- Westwood, Darren Clarke or Colin Montgomerie.

5. Stefania Croce. With her sing-song English and eye-catching, uh, wardrobe, the 30-year-old Italian lost a playoff to Inkster, but charmed golf fans everywhere (particularly male sportswriters). Memo to Ty Votaw: change the LPGA's slogan to La Dolce Vita, post-haste.

NOT

1. Wendy Ward. The likeable young Texan's ball moved after she had addressed it on the 13th hole on Sunday, costing her a penalty stroke and, ultimately, a spot in the Inkster-Croce playoff. First the Alamo, now this ...

2. Karrie Webb. Blew up over the last 10 holes of the final round, ending her dreams of three straight major championships. With Webb having failed to win over the last three months, we've gotten to see another side of her personality.

3. [This space left blank, to denote Webb's personality.]

4. Bob May. The PGA Tour journeyman leads nearly wire-to-wire at Memphis before being passed by Begay down the stretch. If at first you don't succeed ...

5. [This spot reserved for Davis Love III, who may be vacationing but is sure to join us again soon.]
