  Inside Golf - Alan Shipnuck

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world.

HOT

1. Hale Irwin. With a 65-65 weekend he wins his fifth U.S. Open. Of course, only three of them really count.

2. Notah Begay. A clutch 25-footer at the last at Hartford carries Begay to his second consecutive victory and fourth in the past 11 months. Only another darkly complexioned Stanford alum has won more often.

3. Janice Moodie. The engaging young Scot gets her first victory at the ShopRite Classic, becoming only the second woman from golf's birthplace to win on the LPGA tour. Who knew Stanford was a better place to learn the game?

4. Patrick Sjöland. The Swede outduels his countryman, Fredrik Jacobson, to win the Irish Open. Or was it Jacobson outdueling Sjöland? All those Swedes look alike.

5. Mark Hensby. Survives a seven-hole playoff at the Buy.com Carolina Classic. One more hole and the mercy rules would have been invoked -- to spare the fans any more tedium.

NOT

1. The USGA. First Juli Inkster in '99, then Tiger Woods last month, now Irwin. The bluecoats are seeing red -- red numbers, that is.

2. Mark Calcavecchia. His last name translates to "old shoe" in Italian, which may be generous after he blows a three-stroke lead at the GHO.

3. Sergio Garcia. Only two strokes back heading into the final round at the Irish Open, La Niña shoots a 77 to get blown away. The most depressing ending this side of The Perfect Storm.

4. Jack's ribs. Soreness has Nicklaus contemplating W/D throughout the Senior Open, but he soldiers on, finishing middle of the pack. The guy's got a lot of heart. These days, that's all he's got.

5. TV viewers. Sign Boy has signed on for another year of those inane commercials. God help us all.
