The Hot List: July 25 Special Open Championship Edition
Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world. HOT 1. Tiger Woods. Joins the celestial company of Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen, but let's be honest -- none of those guys in their prime would be able to carry the kid's swooshed jock. Un-freaking-believable. 2. The Old Course. Even without its best defense, the wind, golf's grand dame proved it is the wildest, wooliest, most entertaining venue in championship golf. 19 under? Hey, that's golf in the 21st century.
4. The Road Hole. Along with the 12th at Augusta, the most terrifying hole in the world. How hard is it? Woods was lucky to play the Road Hole in plus-2 for the week. 5. David Duval. That little embarrassment at the 17th aside, Duval played his heart out, and he may finally be ready to emerge from his slumber. Then again, I thought as much leading up to the Masters. NOT 1. David Duval's putting. My hands shake just watching him. 2. Streakers. I think we can all agree naked women running around golf courses is good in theory, but in Great Britain it's bad in practice. Call me when those girls get a tan, a Stairmaster, and some serious orthodontic work. 3. UK golfers. Darren Clarke is the only islander to crack the top-10 in Europe's flagship event. Maybe they thought the course was measured in meters. 4. Sergio García. After blowing a shot on Saturday, the tantrum-prone La Niña digs a hole in mid-fairway. Has it really been less than a year since we all fell in love with him at the PGA? 5. Golf. You know when you hear a really great song, then they play it over and over again on the radio to the point that you're incredibly sick of it, even though it's the same song and, theoretically, just as great as when you first heard it? I rest my case. Don't forget to check out Alan's new column, On Tour, posting each Thursday. Click here to send him a question or comment.
