  Inside Golf - Alan Shipnuck

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world.

HOT

1. Charles Howell. The 20-year-old wunderkind finishes third at the John Deere in only his third Tour event, all but locking up his card for next year. Is it too early to book him for the 2001 Showdown at Sherwood?

2. Dorothy Delasin. The spunky 19-year-old becomes the youngest LPGA winner in a quarter century, with a gutsy performance at the Giant Eagle Classic (whatever that is). Who would ever guess that Tiger Woods and Karrie Webb would be elder statesman?

3. Dubai. And not just for the obvious reasons -- the Euro tour just announced that next year Tiger will skip Doral to play in the Desert Classic.

4. Michael Clark. The 31-year-old rookie wins the starless John Deere Classic in a rain-delayed finish that absolutely no one saw. New tournament slogan: nothing cures insomnia like a Deere.

NOT

1. Mark James. The European Ryder Cup committee will meet tomorrow to determine the fate of the author/loose cannon.

2. Arsenio Delasin. Dorothy's dad wins this year's Peter Kuchar Award in Over the Top Parenting for the fist-pumping hoedown that followed his daughter's winning putt. Watching him embarrass himself, I found myself longing for the understated touch of Earl Woods.

3. Kirk Triplett. He never had a chance in that playoff against Clark II, as the Golf gods permit only one victory per bucket hat per decade.

4. Pat Hurst. After blowing numerous chances down the stretch, the veteran has won only one tournament in the almost two years since she had a kid. Memo to Pat: I know babies are cute and all, but nothing adds life to a house like a well-stocked trophy case.
