  Inside Golf - Alan Shipnuck

Sports Illustrated's Alan Shipnuck takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the golf world.

Such a pleasant weekend of golf, so we here at the Hot List have decided to drop the Nots for a week ...

HOT

1. Ernie Els. Big Easy, who's had more seconds than Fridge Perry, finally gets off the schneid at the International. The key to his victory? Tiger was gone fishing.

2. Greg Norman's body. Uh, let me rephrase that. With a new hip, to go along with a new shoulder, Shark has pushed back his retirement from next year until 2005 in hopes of challenging Tiger. Milk with your Snickers?

3. The Ryder Cup. With the booting of Mark James as a captain's assistant, the nastiness and backroom politicking reach a new low in the annals of this international goodwill match. With the Cup still more than a year away, we may very well get the most fascinating look at human behavior this side of Survivor.

4. Lee Westwood. With his fifth W of the season, at the Scandinavian Masters, he vaults into first place on the Order of Merit. Next up: the Jerry Lewis telethon!

5. Lorie Kane. After nine second-place finishes, the 35-year-old Canuck is being celebrated as a national hero up north, following her first LPGA victory at the Michelob Light Classic. Here in America we simply call it the law of averages and leave it at that.

6. Michael Campbell. AWOL since being stomped by Woods at the World Match Play, the formerly torrid Campbell resurfaces with a second place at the Scandinavian Masters. Let's see, it took him six months to recover. That puts him years ahead of Davis Love.

7. David Berganio. Straight out of South Central L.A., Berganio wins a playoff at the Buy.com Omaha Classic, paving the way for a return to the PGA Tour. Ron Shelton: Looking for a sequel?
