Weekly Power Ratings

Click here for more on this story

Posted: Tuesday March 23, 1999 11:21 AM

We here at CNNSI.com have found a better way to take the pulse of the golf world -- the weekly power rating. Think of it like the coach's poll in college football, melding data and opinion to come up with one answer to two similar but distinctly different questions: Who are the hottest players in golf, and who are the best? Remember this, however: We reserve the right to be contradictory, inconsistent, and occasionally misguided.

MEN

1. Tom Lehman. Like Bill Clinton at New Hampshire primary in '92, earns the mantle of Comeback Kid despite finishing second at Bay Hill.

2. Tim Herron. Lumpy's bank account is getting fat.

3. Davis Love III. Keeps the Sabbath holy by always resting on Sundays.

4. Corey Pavin. Another solid showing. Erstwhile Bulldog beginning to show some teeth.

5. Phil Mickelson. Finish tied for fifth at Bay Hill. Sally Struthers telethon postponed for at least a week

6. Hubert Green. Ichabod Crane lookalike carried Doc Morgan to victory at the Senior Tour Legends of Golf.

7. Casey Martin. Hit 19 of 56 fairways at the Nike Tour's Monterrey (Mexico) Open, but somehow finished 15th, thus earning the Danny Ainge Award for Scrappiness.

8. Matt Kuchar. Tied with Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie for 52nd place in Orlando. He's 20 years old, plays for free, and has to deal with his obnoxious dad. What's their excuse?

9. Curtis Strange. Tie for 33rd a great week ... for TV viewers, who were granted a reprieve from his blather.

10. Barry Cheesman. Went 66-82 during a bipolar weekend at Bay Hill. Lithium, anyone?
