Jeremy Mayfield is considered one of NASCAR's brightest young stars. In his sixth year of Winston Cup competition, the Owensboro, Ky., native drives for Penske-Kranefuss Racing. He's in his second season as the teammate for three-time Winston Cup champion Rusty Wallace.
Mayfield, 30, finished a career-high seventh in the 1998 Winston Cup point standings. He collected his first career victory in the Pocono 500, passing childhood idol and fellow Owensboro native Darrell Waltrip for the lead with 20 laps remaining. He led the Winston Cup points race four times during the first 16 races last season, and posted 16 straight top-25 finishes to open the season, tops among all drivers.
The 1993 ARCA Rookie of the Year, Mayfield began racing in 1982. He made his Winston Cup debut with Cale Yarborough Motorsports in the 17th race of the 1994 season.
