Former National Football League head coach Ron Meyer serves as a NFL analyst for CNN/Sports Illustrated. He appears on CNN's NFL PREVIEW with analysts Trev Alberts, Pat Kirwan and SI's Peter King. Hosted by CNN/Sports Illustrated's Bob Lorenz, the show airs Sundays at 10 a.m. (ET) during the NFL season.
Meyer's NFL experience includes head coaching stints with both the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots. With the Colts from 1987-91, Meyer led the '87 team to its first divisional title in more than a decade. That season he was awarded AFC Coach of the Year.
Meyer was named coach of the New England Patriots in 1982. While with the Patriots, Meyer took a 2-14 team in 1981 to a 5-4 record during the 1982 strike shortened-season. He was again named AFC coach of the year in 1982. During his three years with the Patriots, he posted an 18-15 regular season mark.
Meyer began coaching following his career as a defensive back at Purdue University. His first coaching post was at Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind., in 1964. The following year he moved to Purdue as an offensive assistant in charge of the backfield, receivers and overall passing game. After six seasons with Purdue and a Rose Bowl victory, Meyer moved to the Dallas Cowboys as a scout. With the Cowboys, the team posted a 21-7 record and a victory in Super Bowl VI. Meyer also turned around programs in the college ranks with the University of Las Vegas and SMU, taking both teams to nationally recognized programs.
Since retiring from the NFL, Meyer served as head coach of the Las Vegas Posse of the Canadian Football League for the '94 season. Currently, in addition to his duties as NFL analyst for CNN/Sports Illustrated and appearing on CNN's NFL PREVIEW, he works as a regional director for a hotel and casino in Dallas, Tex.
