Patriots fading in the AFC East

During the Patriots' bye-week in early November, quarterback Drew Bledsoe took his family to the Cayman Islands. Right now it seems like he has yet to return.

Since then New England is 0-2 and Bledsoe is just 30 of 71 with eight interceptions. To make matters worse, if Bledsoe doesn't come out of his nosedive, coach Pete Carroll could lose his job.

Owner Bob Kraft is none too pleased that the Pats are fading in the playoff race and are now tied with the lowly Jets at 2-3 in the division.

Drafting the correct Gramatica

When Tampa Bay used a third-round pick on kicker Martin Gramatica last April, some of the Bucs scoffed at the decision.

But in Sunday's win over the Falcons, Gramatica made the Bucs look like geniuses when he kicked four field goals, including two 50-yarders. Said Sapp: "When they picked him, we said, 'Uh, oh. Third-round pick?' But after we watched him kick the first couple of weeks, we knew we had something special."

Maybe now security guards at Raymond James Stadium won't hassle Gramatica again when he tries to use the player's entrance on game days.

Belichick candidate for head-coaching jobs

Once again, count Jets defensive coordinator Bill Belichick as a likely candidate for any upcoming head-coaching jobs. At the top of the list should be any team that has the Bills on its schedule.

In the last two years Belichick's defense has allowed Doug Flutie to complete only 47 percent of his passes with just three touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Bye-bye to Bam?

This may be bye-bye to Bam week in Kansas City. The Chiefs are on a three-game losing streak and are fed up with overweight, under-motivated running back Bam Morris.

Morris has been inactive for the last two weeks and has not taken a snap with the offense since early November. The Chiefs had hoped Morris would be their long-sought workhorse back this year.

Statistical anomalies of the week:

  • Against Tennessee, the Steelers had more penalties (11) than points (10).

  • Washington back Stephen Davis had 183 yards rushing against the Giants on Sunday, which would have instantly made him New York's rushing leader for the season.

  • The Chargers have lost five games in a row in each of their last three years

And finally, things can't get much worse for Eagles' rookie quarterback Donovan McNabb. On Sunday, eight-year-old Brittney Sanford competed in the Punt, Pass & Kick competition. Miss Sanford threw the ball 30'9", which would have beaten McNabb, who threw for nine yards in the first half.
