George gaining strength for Titans
Posted: Tuesday December 14, 1999 03:32 PM
Before the season began, coach Jeff Fisher told me the key to the Titans' season would be preventing running back Eddie George from wearing down as he has in the past.
In each of his first three seasons, George's average yards per carry fell by more than a half yard in the final eight games.
But this year, the Titans passing attack has taken some of the pressure off George. In the first half of 1999 he gained 3.6 yards per carry, but in the last five games he is averaging almost five yards per rush.
Beuerlein as surprised as anyone at call
No one was more surprised by the quarterback sneak call at the end of Sunday's Green Bay-Carolina game than Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein, who only had two other rushing scores in his entire 13-year career.
His teammates also thought the call was a mistake. "Are you kidding me?" says center Frank Garcia. "I can run faster than Steve."
Beuerlein's 5-yard touchdown crawl nearly doubled the team's rushing total in the game. But the call was a brilliant decision by George Seifert, who has won more games with less talent than anyone in the NFL this year.
Odd bit of Buccaneers history
As the Shaun King legend grows in Tampa Bay, here's an odd bit of history: The last time the Bucs went to the NFC Championship game was 20 years ago when they were led by Doug Williams, another quarterback from a school in Louisiana.
Back in 1979, the team lost to the Rams in the NFC title game. This time around, the Bucs appear to be one of the few teams in the NFC that could topple St. Louis.
It's a dog's life in St. Louis
And finally, it seems just about everything is going right in St. Louis this year. Recently, defensive tackle D'Marco Farr was reunited with his dog Taz after a three-year separation. In 1996 Taz ran away from home, but just last week he showed up at a local humane society and was reunited with Farr. Is it luck? Or fate? Or is Taz just no longer embarrassed to be associated with the Rams.
