San Antonio at Phoenix: Game 4

  Ernie Johnson Viewpoint

Have we seen the last of the NBA champs for this season? We'll know before midnight Tuesday in the East when the Spurs and Suns have put Game 4 in the books.

Tim Duncan practiced Monday, but reports out of the San Antonio camp are that he will not play Tuesday night. Same for the Suns' Jason Kidd, who went through a workout Monday.

Assuming those two remain innocent bystanders, we'll have the same lineups running Tuesday night that we saw Saturday. That could be a bit of a frightening concept if you're the Spurs and you did get the huge game you needed from David Robinson (37 points) -- and still lost.

San Antonio was ambushed in that game, leading by 10 going to the fourth quarter when Todd Day showed up and outscored San Antonio on his own 16-15. Day has played 452 regular-season games in the NBA, but until this season, had never been to the playoffs.

He got 13 minutes of run in the first two games and had scored 6 points. So all he does in Game 3 is score 16 in the fourth quarter.

Such is playoff life in the NBA. You get a chance, that first one goes in, you feel it, and then you can't miss.

Todd Day lived it Saturday, and he put the champs on the ropes, one Lennox Lewis uppercut away from a first round KO.

We await the Game 4 response of the defending champion.

Ernie Johnson is in his 10th year as the studio host for TNT and TBS Superstation's NBA telecasts, as well as TNT's live coverage of the NBA Draft every June.
