Knicks-Heat Game 3 preview

New York's big guns look to get hot at home

  Ernie Johnson Viewpoint

The Knicks and Heat in Miami is one thing. The Knicks and Heat at Madison Square Garden takes the playoff intensity to another level.

Pat Riley back in New York, the Knicks home after swiping the home court edge in Game 2. Two teams out to prove that they're not nearly as inept as they appeared on Tuesday.

Miami's free throw shooting was abysmal that night with the exception of the fourth quarter when they closed the gap. Neither team could shoot from beyond four feet, and there were 60 fouls called. With the whistles blowing at that rate I'm surprised it didn't seem to the TV viewer that there was some annoying tone being fed down the line.

Pat Riley thinks his troops may have underestimated the Knicks going into Game 2, and settled for jumpers rather than bringing the heat inside.

Look for Alonzo Mourning to assert himself in the paint tonight. That apparently was the message from his former coach, and current Turner analyst, John Thompson, who told Zo that the game is played from the inside out, not the other way around.

Home court hasn't meant much in the playoff history between these teams (only five wins for the home team in the last 12 post season games). New York is still waiting for Latrell Sprewell to bust out, and the same can be said for Allan Houston. Spre is 6-for-25 from the floor in the series ... Houston 11-for-32. New York's lucky to be 1-1.

Will New York's energizers come alive in Game 2 ... will the Heat hit their free throws ... will Zo be a force in the middle ... will we have consecutive trips down the floor uninterrupted by a whistle? So many questions. Answers tonight at 8:00.
