In the House EJ and Co. ease into the New YearUpdated: Wednesday January 10, 2001 6:05 PM
Whadda ya say we ease into the New Year with a schedule that won't be too taxing? Everybody can get their bearings for 2001. Sir Charles can make sure that he's fully recovered from hosting his annual bash in Phoenix. Kenny "The Jet" can have some quiet time to ponder nicknames for the new year. Peter can see what life is like at home in New York on a Tuesday night rather than flying down to Studio A. With college football taking center stage through mid-week, we'll just sit back and wait our turn. Then on Thursday night, we're back to work on TNT. Last week, the Orlando Magic got news they didn't want to hear but had prepared themselves for: Grant Hill won't play for the rest of the season. His surgically repaired ankle needs more surgery and then six to eight months of rehab. That's a real blow to not only a franchise on the rise, but to one of the genuine good guys in the league. Here's hoping that when the 2001 season rolls around, Hill, who will be just 29 then, can return to the form that made him a superstar.
For the time being though, Tracy McGrady is "the man" who will carry Orlando's playoff hopes, and we'll see him and his mates at the Garden Thursday night against the Knicks. New York's one of the toughest teams in the league to figure out. They lose to Boston one night, and then beat the Sixers by 20. Go figure. Latrell Sprewell said it best after that win over Philly. "Why can't we do this every night?" Good question. We'll see which version of the Knicks shows up on TNT Thursday.
Ernie Johnson is in his 11th year as the studio host for TNT and TBS Superstation's NBA telecasts, as well as TNT's live coverage of the NBA Draft every June.
