Georgia Bulldogs loaded at linebacker Posted: Wednesday April 07, 1999 04:55 PM
You know how coaches love quickness. That's why, at Georgia, last fall's linebacker is next fall's defensive end. Starters Adrian Hollingshed and Dustin Luckie moved up to the line this spring and improved the Dawgs' speed dramatically. Georgia coach Jim Donnan could afford to move the pair; he has a wealth of talent at linebacker, led by sophomore-to-be Boss Bailey, the younger, bigger brother of Champ. Playing between Hollingshed and Luckie, we may see freshman Charles Grant, a 6-4, 260-pounder whom Donnan says is one of the best prospects he has seen in 30 years. McNabb heir apparent?Baseball isn't the only sport that develops phenoms this time of year. When you're looking for the next outstanding quarterback in the Big East, most people say it will be Kenny Kelly at Miami. But watch out for Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Michael Vick, who's drawing raves for his rifle-like left arm and his quick feet. Coach Frank Beamer will only say that Vick "could be" a good one. But one of his assistants told me, "Syracuse is getting ready to find out how we felt the last four years," meaning Vick has some Donovan McNabb in him. Beamer is expected to name Vick as his first-teamer over junior Dave Meyer before spring practice ends on April 17. Out of chances?Virginia junior tailback Antwoine Womack may finally have run out of chances. A year ago, Cavaliers coach George Welsh suspended Womack after he was convicted of misdemeanor assault and battery against a female student. Welsh reinstated Womack and last fall, as a backup to Thomas Jones, Womack rushed for 718 yards, averaging more than six yards per carry. But on Monday, a grand jury in Charlottesville indicted Womack for felony malicious wounding over a campus fight in February. He has asked for a jury trial, which may not take place until late summer. If Womack is convicted, Welsh likely will have a two-strikes-and-you're-out policy.December MadnessFrom the Just What We Need Department, the NCAA has approved a 22nd bowl game to be played in Mobile, Alabama on December 22. It looks as if Conference USA will send its second team to the gulf coast. So while the Mardi Gras Bowl crosses its fingers and hopes for Southern Mississippi -- it's only 90 miles away -- the rest of us are left to contemplate the fact that college football is now only 10 bowls away from catching up to March Madness: a 64-team postseason.Sports Illustrated senior writer Ivan Maisel covers the college football beat and appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated.
