Irish streak on the line

As if Notre Dame and its coach Bob Davie need more pressure: a streak that goes back 80 years is on the line this season. The Fighting Irish have won a national championship at least once every decade since 1919. Here's how big an accomplishment this is: if the Irish streak ends at eight decades, the next longest streak, which belongs to Miami and Penn State, is two.

All in the family

Whether Oklahoma State challenges Texas A&M for the Big 12 South is a father-and-son issue. Senior tailback Nathan Simmons must return healthy from a knee injury that knocked him out of spring practice. And coach Bob Simmons must justify his decision to take play-calling away from offensive coordinator Ron Calcagni. Coach Simmons and quarterback Tony Lindsay didn't get along very well last season, although both insist everything is fine now. With 25 seniors on the roster and a defense led by the league's best linebackers, a productive offense will mean the Cowboys may ride a dark horse into the South Division race.

Tough room for young coaches

Ever since the NCAA reduced the number of graduate assistants from four to two, head coaches have bemoaned the future of the sport. How will prospective young coaches get into college football when the opportunities are half of what they used to be? Well, so much for those poor young coaches. At Kansas State, coach Bill Snyder just announced that one of his graduate assistants for the coming season will be Del Miller. That's 48-year-old Del Miller, relieved of his duties as coach at Southwest Missouri State last season. Snyder is helping out an old friend. One more prospective young coach will head into the insurance business.
