Familiar face back in Boulder Posted: Tuesday August 03, 1999 06:53 PM
When a coaching legend retires, at least one coaching generation must pass before said legend can return to inspect his legacy. We didn't see much of Bill McCartney around Colorado in the last few years. But, once Gary Barnett arrived in Boulder, it was only a matter of time before McCartney started to come around. Barnett's defensive coaches felt comfortable asking McCartney to come in one day and discuss defense. McCartney felt comfortable enough with them to accept the invite. It's not a meeting that would have taken place if Rick Neuheisel were still the Buffaloes' coach.
Not so sweet AlabamaLinebacker Travis Carroll became the second Alabama player this summer to request a transfer to an SEC rival.Coach Mike DuBose won't release receiver Eric Locke to go to Tennessee, and he won't release Carroll to go to Florida. Both players have appealed DuBose's decision. If they lose, Locke and Carroll will have to pay their way through school next year. If they attend a non-SEC school, DuBose will release them. Carroll and Locke should try coaching. Tommy Tuberville moved from Ole Miss to Auburn and got a raise for doing it. Do the transfers mean there's something wrong at Alabama? Tide fans should relax. Carroll wanted to leave because a shoulder injury isn't healing quickly. If he must redshirt, he would rather be near his home in Jacksonville.
Climbing the Ricky Williams ladderIf you happened to be driving on I-20 in the Dallas suburb of Duncanville around 10 p.m. this summer and you looked at a big hill on the south side of the interstate, you might have seen one of the best backs in the nation running uphill.Ricky Williams of Texas Tech climbed that hill 12 times a night, four nights a week, borrowing the workout from Hall of Famer Walter Payton. And why not? Getting out from under the shadow of that other Ricky Williams is always going to be an uphill climb.
Holtz' latest trick may be impossibleWe're used to Lou Holtz performing magic tricks, not miracles, so don't expect South Carolina to climb far in the SEC East. The Gamecocks will improve on last season's 1-10 record, but six of their first seven opponents went to bowl games last season, and that doesn't include Tennessee and Florida, which South Carolina will play late in the year.Holtz says Vols coach Phillip Fulmer doesn't know how good he has it. "He gets to play us," Holtz says. Holtz's legendary public sense of humor will be in full force this fall. Anything to keep the attention off the field.
