Second-string Booty still rusty at LSU Posted: Thursday August 26, 1999 08:50 PM
Nearly everyone assumed that Josh Booty would step out of the Marlins minor-league system right into the starting quarterback job at LSU. However, coach Gerry DiNardo announced Wednesday that Craig Nall, not Booty, will be his starter. Nall is a redshirt sophomore who has been through two spring practices. Booty has been through one spring in which he spent time chipping the rust off after not playing football for several years. Booty's slow progress shouldn't come as a surprise. Chris Weinke, who played six seasons of minor league ball, went through it last year at Florida State. Remember his six interceptions against North Carolina State? All of this proves what a remarkable athlete Georgia's Quincy Carter is. This former minor leaguer won the Bulldogs job last season with no spring practice at all. He'll be even better this year.
Jenkins heads to Tuscaloosa for tutorialAlabama fans will debate this fall whether the best quarterback in Tuscaloosa is Andrew Zow or Tyler Watts. But the best quarterback in Tuscaloosa this summer may have been Ortege Jenkins.Yes, the Ortege Jenkins who does some job-sharing of his own at Arizona. Jenkins spent nearly two weeks in Tuscaloosa being tutored by Homer Smith, the former Arizona quarterbacks coach who retired two years ago and moved to Alabama. Jenkins improved his footwork and his throwing motion, which is now more overhand. He has also lost 18 pounds since the end of last season. Jenkins will continue to split the quarterback duties with Keith Smith for the Pac-10 favorites.
Tulane gets no respect in pollsIt's bad enough that Tulane went 12-0 last season and never rose higher than its final ranking of number seven. The latest pies in the Green Wave face are the preseason polls. After finishing with one of only two undefeated records in the nation, Tulane got no, none, zero votes in the Associated Press poll. The Green Wave did get two points in the coaches poll, which is eight fewer than the Clemson team that went 3-8 last season and has no returning starters on its offensive line. But Clemson has Tommy Bowden, the coach who lifted Tulane out of the pack. It's amazing how we voters fall for a pretty face.
