Four's a crowd at Syracuse

Syracuse began the 1999 season hoping that one of its quarterbacks would take the job away from the other. But neither Madei Williams or Troy Nunes impressed the coaches, so Syracuse went out to California and recruited juco QB Chad Elliott, who's more of a dropback passer.

This spring, the coaches divided the work evenly among those three and redshirt freshman R.J. Anderson, which meant that each man got so little work that the Orangemen now have four quarterbacks who can't win the job.

Each player got 18 snaps in the spring game. Nunes doesn't look the part, yet produced two touchdowns in the game. Anderson remains a well of unrealized potential.

When the quarterback derby resumes in August, keep an eye on Elliott. He grasped the freeze-option game well and he's got that dropback arm.

Vols' depth takes another hit

Tennessee sophomore Onterrio Smith left spring practice as a promising tailback behind Travis Henry. But last Wednesday, the Volunteers announced that Smith was tossed off the team by coach Phillip Fulmer for failing a substance test.

Tennessee is a young team, and has only one returning starter on the offensive line. But even without Smith there is some depth at tailback.

Behind Henry is junior Travis Stephens, who shared the job with Henry two seasons ago after Jamal Lewis injured his knee. Stephens agreed to redshirt last season and now is needed more than ever.

Good news in South Bend?

Notre Dame could use some good football news, and they may have found it this spring in the person of sophomore Gary Godsey.

With the schedule that Notre Dame plays this fall, the Irish appeared likely to be one play away from disaster if anything happened to quarterback Arnaz Battle. But Godsey, a 6-6, 240-pound quarterback, played so well this spring that the coaches may rethink plans to move him to tight end.

The brother of Georgia Tech quarterback George Godsey, Gary is agile for his size and smart. He also has become an insurance policy for Battle.
