Vick doesn't even have to pass

This is how good Michael Vick has become. The Virginia Tech sophomore is surely the only player in the history of the Big East or any other conference to complete just five of 17 passes and be named the league's offensive player of the week.

The reason, of course, is some of the most spectacular running that anyone, quarterback or not, has ever done. All well and good, of course, but Vick was so upset with his performance as a passer Saturday at Boston College that he didn't sleep well that night.

Surely he will be more focused this week, and he'll have to be. The surprising Temple Owls are second in the Big East in rushing defense, giving up 96 yards per game. Then again, Vick ran well against Florida State. Who are we kidding?

This one's bad, even for Kansas State

It is old hat to attack Kansas State for its schedule, but it's more clear than ever that this hat fits Bill Snyder as snugly as ever.

The Wildcats have played five teams. Only one of them has won a game, and that win, by Louisiana Tech, came against I-AA Mississippi Valley State. The other teams-- Iowa, Ball State, North Texas and Colorado -- went oh-for-August and oh-for-September.

Sure, Kansas State is good. But it's impossible, yet again, to know how good.

SEC down -- for now

Now here's a stunner: There is not a single Southeastern Conference team in the AP Top 10. That hasn't happened in 12 years.

Keep an eye, though, on the poll after this Saturday when Auburn, the only league team to get out of September undefeated, plays at Mississippi State, the team that embarrassed Florida last week. But, in a telling sign of the state of the league, Auburn has 21 freshmen on its two-deep roster. The Tigers are probably undefeated because four of their five games have been at home.

The whole league is young this season. Take your best swing now. A bunch of SEC teams will be better next year.
