Heisman voters waiting on Heupel Updated: Friday December 01, 2000 9:56 AM
As if the Big 12 Championship Game doesn't have enough hinging on it... The Heisman Trophy voters are holding onto their ballots. Usually, the Downtown Athletic Club has received about half the votes by the next-to-last week. As of Wednesday afternoon, less than 15 percent of the ballots had been received. Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel has had the kind of season that you don't even dare dream about. He has led the Sooners to the brink of the national championship. He has put up spectacular numbers. Without him, Oklahoma would be planning to play in the Alamo Bowl. That said, my Heisman vote is going to Floirda State quarterback Chris Weinke. He has performed better. Sure, without him, Florida State might still be No. 3. But I'm not going to penalize him because his teammates are better, too.
Erickson can't escape IrishNotre Dame was a nemesis for Dennis Erickson when he coached Miami. The Irish stand in his way again. Erickson's Oregon State Beavers want a Fiesta Bowl bid. The Irish want one, too. Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen says the league will bolt the BCS if the Beavers don't get a bid. There's plenty to recommend them. Oregon State has a high ranking and bowl-hungry fans. If the Beavers play Miami, the 'Canes will have to beat their school's former coach to have a chance to share the national title. Nice storyline but is it enough to turn down a Miami-Notre Dame matchup? Another wrinkle: if Kansas State upsets Oklahoma, the Wildcats get an automatic Fiesta bid as Big 12 champion. Would the Fiesta serve up Kansas State and Oregon State? I don't think so. Oregon State may have to play Texas in the Holiday Bowl.
Mr. LeverageLet's recap what has happened to the rumored and announced candidates to replace Mike DuBose at Alabama. Oklahoma's Bob Stoops got a contract extension and a big raise. Clemson's Tommy Bowden got a contract extension and a big raise. Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer and Miami's Butch Davis are about to get contract extensions and big raises. We don't know who Crimson Tide athletic director Mal Moore will hire but we know four coaches ready to name him Man of the Year. Sports Illustrated senior writer Ivan Maisel covers the college football beat for the magazine and appears each Saturday on CNN's College Football Preview. Chat with Ivan this Monday, December 4 at 2 p.m.
