Another day in the dynasty
It was just another Wednesday afternoon at Florida State. The past, in the person of Eagles rookie defensive lineman Corey Simon, wandered through the lobby of the athletic building in his workout clothes, stealing a little time on his old campus during Philly's off week. Current stars such as Snoop Minnis, Brian Allen and Tommy Polley came through to work out and give a couple of interviews in preparation for the Orange Bowl. And the future? Freshman quarterback Chris Rix, looking more and more like the heir apparent to Chris Weinke, was organizing the young receivers to go catch a few passes. Just another Wednesday afternoon in a dynasty.
Jersey prideGreg Schiano is a Jersey guy with a Jersey guy's patience, which means he wants to turn Rutgers around now, if not sooner.Rutgers has been the black hole of Eastern football, a place where coaching careers get sucked in, never to be seen again. Schiano, the former Miami defensive coordinator, thinks he can beat history, which dictates that the best talent in the state, guys like Ron Dayne and Christian Peter, leave for other schools. Schiano has invited the state's top recruits to campus. He wants to sit them in a room together and make them understand that if they all stayed home, they could make Jersey proud. As Penn State shows some vulnerability, Schiano's timing might be right. If not, the inexorable pull of the black hole awaits. O'Brien to switch sidelines in Hawaii? In the end, George Welsh retired from Virginia on his own time and on his own terms. Welsh says he agonized for two weeks over whether, at age 67, he had had enough. Those who know him well say that Welsh also wanted to do whatever he could to ensure that he would be replaced by his former defensive coordinator, Boston College coach Tom O'Brien. During the season, Virginia athletic director Terry Holland all but had a deal with Clemson offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez. When Welsh dallied, Rodriguez went instead to West Virginia. Holland probably won't make a hire until after the Cavaliers return home from their bowl game in Hawaii. Funny thing: Boston College and O'Brien are in Hawaii, too. Sports Illustrated senior writer Ivan Maisel covers the college football beat for the magazine and is a regular contributor to CNNSI.com.
