World Ranking domination Woods setting new standards for greatness with victoriesPosted: Thursday March 23, 2000 07:52 PM
By winning 10 times in his last 16 PGA Tour events, Tiger Woods is on a victory pace not seen since Byron Nelson won 18 tournaments in 1945. Woods has now surpassed Ben Hogan (10 victories out of 19 tournaments between 1949 and '53) and Johnny Miller (10 out of 23 in 1974 and '75). Woods is also the first player to open up a 10-point margin in the World Ranking, leading David Duval 22.87 to 12.59. Sorenstams make historyBefore the Sorenstam sisters, Annika and Charlotta, put together back-to-back victories recently, none of the four previous pairs of siblings to play on the LPGA tour had ever each won events. The Bauer sisters, both of whom are in the Hall of Fame, came the closest in 1956, when Marlene won the Pittsburgh Open and Alice finished second. Champions' chance to shine Talk about dripping nostalgia. On the day before the first round of this year's British Open at St. Andrews, past champions of the event will gather to play the first, second, 17th and 18th holes at the Old Course in an exhibition. The oldest among the 27 surviving champions: 87-year-old Sam Snead, who won the British Open at St. Andrews in 1946. Rookie runsBy teaming with Jim Colbert to win the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, Andy North became the 10th player to win his first appearance on the Senior Tour. The others were Don January, Roberto de Vicenzo, Arnold Palmer, Rod Funseth, Gary Player, George Archer, Jack Nicklaus, Bruce Fleisher and Lanny Wadkins. Unlike the others, North's victory was in an unofficial event. Title holders at the TPCLook for the winner of a major championship to claim victory at this weekend's Players Championship. Of the previous 26 winners of the event, 21 have a major championship on their resume.Sports Illustrated senior writer Jaime Diaz covers the golf beat and appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN's Pro Golf Weekly.
