Record-breaking victory

Singh won Masters despite high putting total

Vijay Singh cited his uncharacteristically steady performance on the greens as the key to victory at the Masters, and there's no doubt that three-putting only three times over 72 holes was important. But Singh's 124 total putts were the most ever taken by a Masters winner, surpassing the previous recorded high of 123 by Tom Watson in 1983. All of which points to the real foundation of Singh's triumph -- the 58 greens he hit in regulation to lead the field.

Putting predictions

There's always a good chance a putting record will be set at the MCI Classic. Because the Harbour Town Golf Links has such small, flattish greens, five of the six recorded low 72 hole putting totals have occurred there. The record of 93 was set at Harbour Town by Kenny Knox in 1989, when he tied the all-time record for fewest putts in a single round, with 18.

Count on Quigley

At this week's PGA Seniors Championship, Dana Quigley is playing in his 100th consecutive tournament on the Senior Tour. But reaching the century mark does not make Quigley the game's over-50 ironman. That distinction belongs to Mike McCollough, who is playing in 119th straight event.

Cashing in

Gary Nicklaus will always play in a long shadow, but at least he has surpassed his father in one statistical area. The $348,420 he has won this year exceeds the most Jack ever won in a single year, which was $316,911 in 1971.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Jaime Diaz covers the golf beat and appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN's Pro Golf Weekly.
