Trevino a winner in five decades Posted: Friday June 30, 2000 07:50 PM
With his Senior Tour victory last week in New Jersey, Lee Trevino joined Gary Player as the only PGA Tour player in history to win official events in five decades. By winning his all-time leading 29th Senior Tour event, the 60-year-old Trevino put another win between he and Hale Irwin , who has 27 career victories. Begay on his way upNotah Begay joined some elite company with his third career victory last week in Memphis. Next to Tiger Woods, who has won 11 times on the PGA Tour in the last twelve months, the players who are tied for the most wins -- three -- in the same time period are Hal Sutton, Phil Mickelson and the 27-year-old Native American. Better have your 'A' game at HartfordPlayers go low at Hartford's TPC River Highlands Course. The last time a winner shot a round higher than 69 there was in 1996, when D.A. Weibring shot a par 70 in the third round. Golf nirvana for a lucky fewThis week's Murphy's Irish Open on the European Tour puts one of golf's great treasures -- the Old Course at Ballybunion -- on center stage. Electronic images of the wild, windblown links and its fearsome 11th hole can be seen on a golf ball commercial, but a trip to the west coast of Ireland to experience the hallowed ground firsthand is highly recommended for any golfer. Indeed, several top Europeans playing this week in Ireland will soon complete a rare triple -- tournaments at Pebble Beach, Ballybunion and St. Andrews in the span of six weeks. Webb, Inkster hogging the majorsKarrie Webb and Juli Inkster have now combined to win the last five LPGA majors. The only other time that was done was in 1961 and 1962, when Mickey Wright won four consecutive major titles, a streak preceded by Mary Lena Falk's victory at the 1961 Western Open, and ended by Merle Lindstrom's 1962 U.S. Open win. Sports Illustrated senior writer Jaime Diaz covers the golf beat for the magazine and appears each Saturday on CNN's "Sports Illustrated Golf Plus" show.
