It may be the most obscure of records, but because he has put so much effort into improving his iron play, it's one Tiger Woods would take great pride in. If Woods can keep up his pace of hitting 74.1 percent of greens in regulation, he will set a new PGA Tour standard for that vital statistic. Tim Simpson holds the tour mark for the best g.i.r. percentage ever achieved over a full year -- 74.0 percent in 1992.

Boss of the Moss boss of Brown Deer Park

Some golfers always play well at certain courses. For Loren Roberts , that's Brown Deer Park, the site of this week's Greater Milwaukee Open. From 1994-99, Roberts has shot in the 60s 17 times for a collective 67 under par. The popgun hitting but pure putting 45-year-old veteran set the tournament scoring record of 265 with his victory in 1996, and has two other runner ups. Naturally, he's back this weekend.

Iwin can match Jack's mark

Along with his quest to pass Lee Trevino as the all-time leader in tournament victories on the Senior tour, Hale Irwin can close in on yet another record this weekend. By winning the Ford Senior Players Championship, Irwin would notch his seventh Senior tour major championship, putting him only one behind the leader, Jack Nicklaus .

Maruyama cashing in on PGA Tour

Shigeki Maruyama's tie for third at last week's Advil Western Open made him the first native of Japan to earn $1 million in a season on the PGA Tour.

Old memories at the Old Course

Next Wednesday's four-hole exhibition by past British Open champions over the Old Course at St. Andrews promises to be special. With 88-year-old Sam Snead and late entry Jack Nicklaus in the 22-man field, the only living champions who will miss the event are Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Johnny Miller, Kel Nagle and 1951 winner Max Faulkner .

Sports Illustrated senior writer Jaime Diaz covers the golf beat for the magazine and appears every Saturday on CNN's "Sports Illustrated Golf Plus" show. Chat with Jaime every Monday at 1 p.m. EDT.
