There's no doubt the 1999 Ryder Cup left some hard feelings, but they've been put aside since the shocking news that the European captain at Brookline, Mark James, has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Cancer survivor Paul Azinger dropped his ultra-competitive Ryder Cup persona to call the 46-year-old James with words of encouragement, while Ben Crenshaw, the U.S. captain at Brookline, did the same with a letter.

Howell needs to be in a hurry

Charles Howell III rocketed out of the blocks in his mid season bid to earn exempt status for next year's PGA Tour, but recent slim pickings mean the talented 21-year-old is going to have to hustle. With only three official tournaments left to finish among the top 125 money winners, this year's NCAA individual champion has earned $263,000, meaning he'll need to make about $120,000 to earn his card for 2001. The pressure is taking its toll. Last week at Kingsmill, Howell was well positioned for a good check after two rounds but finished 76-75 to barely earn $6,000.

Furyk looking to cash in again in Vegas

If Jim Furyk can win the Invensys Classic at Las Vegas this week, he'll become the first tour player to win the same event in three consecutive seasons since Tom Watson accomplished the feat at the 1980 Byron Nelson Classic. It would also give Furyk his fourth victory at Las Vegas.

Eclipsed by a fearless Tiger

If Tiger Woods hadn't won 17 times on the PGA Tour in the last two seasons, the other seven players who have at least three victories in that time would surely be getting more credit. For the record, David Duval has five victories, Notah Begay four, and Carlos Franco, Phil Mickelson, Jesper Parnevik, Hal Sutton, and David Toms each have three.

Politics anyone?

On the political front, it was the always diplomatic Crenshaw's idea that his friend George W. Bush charm the electorate by recently going on "Live with Regis" wearing a dark, monochromatic ensemble just like Philbin wears on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

And in Missouri, the late Payne Stewart's 81-year-old mother, Bee, is running as a Democrat against a Republican incumbent for a seat in the state's House of Representatives. The same spirit prompted her son to wear knickers.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Jaime Diaz covers the golf beat for the magazine and appears each Saturday on CNN's "Sports Illustrated Golf Plus" show.
