Sit back and enjoy 'magical moment'
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- There was an ironic taint to the headlines that followed Tiger Woods' remarkable triumph at St. Andrews a month ago ... that in the shadow of his glory lies a veritable wasteland. Who will endure the kind of mental and physical pain it takes to challenge him, and when, how quickly? For if the playing field remains this uneven for much longer, it will spill the game into some forgettable abyss. Instead of simply reveling in the grandness of his accomplishment, many chose to bottom feed, to look at this glass nowhere near half-full and yet overflowing with one vineyard's genius. He has reduced the game today to he who has and the rest who don't -- and from that we surmise golf itself suffers as a consequence.
Tiger comes to this PGA championship at Valhalla a ludicrous favorite and yet who would dare bet against him? A much safer wager would be on the second-place man come Sunday night. Whether this is good or bad is left to the columnists in charge. What is crystal clear is that we find ourselves in a very magical moment in time now, an era of brilliance rarely seen in any sport. Instead of arguing it's merits, we should simply bask in its wonderment. And maybe wonder how long it's going to take Charles Howell or Adam Scott or Aaron Baddely to bring some heat? The meter's running, boys.
