Suddenly the Buffalo Sabres have jumped into the Mark Messier rumor cycle.

The Buffalo News reported that team owner John Rigas has advised general manager Darcy Regier to try and close a deal for the veteran of six Stanley Cup championships.

Quiet all around, but no one has denied the story.

Rigas and Regier have had go-rounds on this issue before, with the owner reportedly having urged the GM to make some sort of deal that would satisfy fans who are wondering when Rigas will make good on his 1999-post-season promise to get the team "the tools" to finish the job.

Messier would be welcomed with open arms by many in the Sabres' locker room who feel a veteran presence is just what's needed for the team to refocus with an eye on the ultimate prize.

Other teams rumored to be in the Messier hunt include the New Jersey Devils, the New York Rangers and perhaps the Dallas Stars.

Blackhawks primed to move Gilmour

As we reported here weeks ago, the Chicago Blackhawks are shopping center Doug Gilmour. Toronto would be the team of choice for Gilmour, who had some of his best NHL seasons there, but so far no one is talking on the record, and even Gilmour is still saying he would like to remain with the Blackhawks.

In terms of point production, Gilmour is probably a better $6 million pickup than Messier, but Messier is still coveted for his leadership and Stanley Cup experience.

Oilers eyeing Sabres' Grosek?

The Edmonton Oilers are said to have a mild interest in under-achieving forward Michal Grosek, but so far haven't put much on the table except rumors that they would like to unload Alexander Selivanov. This is more a coaching trade than anything the respective general mangers have cooked up as both players have fallen out of favor with their respective coaches.
