Nowhere to go but up Posted: Thursday July 15, 1999 05:36 PM
The way I look at it, one season is over and a new one is just beginning. When you have as disappointing a first half as I've had, that's really the only way you can look at it. I'm surprised that I'm still in the top ten in the point standings. But 10 races is a long time and I know we have the car and the team to help turn things around for the No. 12 Target Honda-Reynard. Although I haven't been happy with most of the races, I've been in surprisingly good spirits throughout the year. How could I not be. I get to watch one of the best drivers in the world every week -- Juan Montoya. I knew he was going to be tough when I first saw him drive, but I don't think I would have predicted he'd win four of the first 10 races. He's good. I'm glad that he's been able to keep Target/Chip Ganassi Racing's winning streak alive and I know that he's not the only member of Team Target who's going to be on the podium in 1999.
People ask me if there's been one thing that's happened to make such a difference in my results from the past few years. To be honest, it's a lot of small things. Almost each race, I've had some bad luck, which has prevented me from reaching the top-three. I have a lot of faith in my skills and the car has been running well. It's like our team partner Joe Montana told me: "When you're having bad luck, it seems keep getting worse and worse, and it will only continue to get worse if you don't realize that it's just bad luck and has nothing to do with your skill." This season is far from over and I'm looking forward to getting my boys down to victory circle.
