Good finishes a late-season priority Posted: Friday August 13, 1999 11:29 AM
It's that time of year again. It's time when every race counts and every CART driver is racing for as many points as he can get. With seven races remaining on the 1999 CART/FedEx Championship Series, fans should be ready for a great show. You already saw it with the Grand Prix of Detroit. My teammate Juan Montoya went into the race with a nice lead over Dario Franchitti in the point standings and after the race he was in second place, five points down. Although he's still upset about the DNF in Detroit, this type of tight points race is great experience for him. He'll be a much better driver in the future because of what he's going through now. Juan gets a chance to show this series just exactly what he's made of as he attempts to regain the points lead this weekend in Mid-Ohio. As for myself, I've been very pleased with the performance of our car and crew the past two weeks. The pole position in Michigan was a nice boost for us and the fifth-place finish in Detroit gave us some much-needed points heading into the final stretch. No matter how many points back you are in the standings, it's never too late in the season to be worrying about getting good points for your team. I haven't had the type of season I was hoping for, but with the tradition Target/Chip Ganassi Racing has built over the years, I owe it to the team to do my best each time I'm on the track and represent the team the best I can. Plus, my old teammate Alex Zanardi and our team partner Joe Montana are two guys who have taught me to never give up. I'm confident that I can earn a win this season and I would love to be able to give the team a little taste of success for all its hard work this season.
