A sporting Thanksgiving There are thanks to be given, and thank-you-notsPosted: Wednesday November 24, 1999 02:55 PM
Before we start to stuff down all that stuffing, it's a tradition around these parts to pause and think about all the good in the world we have to be thankful for. In the world of sports, that is. Sure, there are other things we should be giving thanks for this holiday season. Family. Friends. The fact that we're expected to pig out this long weekend. But if you want to do that, why don't you punch up thanksgiving.com and have a run at it over there? Here at CNNSI.com ... We thank the New York Yankees who, like 'em or not, showed us this season how baseball should be played. (And thanks for getting the World Series over quickly, so we didn't have to hear from all those obnoxious Yankees fans any longer.) A tip of the hat goes to Sergio Garcia, who proved a little boyish enthusiasm can be good in a sport filled with grim-faced automatons. (And we'd thank young Serg if he could convince David Duval of that.) Let's raise a drumstick to Andre Agassi, too, who made an incredible comeback this year to recapture the No. 1 spot in tennis, finally showing he has plenty of substance to go with his style. (And, thanks, Andre, for providing the modicum of personality this sport has left.) We toast John Elway, who showed us that timing is everything by stepping out when the stepping was good. (Though, honestly, we'd be more thankful if he would have tipped Barry Sanders to the drill.) Thanks go to the NBA, for trying to revive the running game and take the thuggery out of the game. (We'd thank you, too, if you'd take Latrell Sprewell somewhere -- anywhere.) Thanks go to the New York Mets, who made things interesting by being both bad and good this season. (The Atlanta Braves would like to especially thank card sharks Bobby Bonilla and Rickey Henderson.) And thanks to the St. Louis Rams and Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions, just for making us look at the standings every Monday. (And a belated thanks to the San Francisco 49ers. See you guys in a decade.) A sorely needed thanks goes to Terrell Davis and Jamal Anderson, Vinny Testaverde and Steve Young. Evidently, without them, their teams are Jell-O. (The Seahawks send thanks, on the other hand, to Joey Galloway, who showed that their team is just fine without him.) We give thanks for the U.S. Women's Soccer Team, who gave us something to cheer about this year -- and somebody new to cheer. (Remember them?) And thanks, finally, to fans everywhere, who continually show an amazing ability to ignore all the money and greed and bad taste and lack of showmanship around sports these days to concentrate on what it's all about -- enjoying the games. (Thankfully, we're not including soccer fans or Denver football fans in this.) Happy Thanksgiving. Let's eat.
