The Hot List Posted: Monday February 08, 1999 12:19 PM
Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim takes a weekly look at who's hot and who's not in the tennis world. AD IN Martina Hingis: Swiss Miss wins Pan Pacific tournament to reclaim the No. 1 ranking she acquiesced to Lindsay Davenport last year. Fabrice Santoro: Two-handed French gunslinger beats countryman Arnaud Clement in Marseilles final. Amanda Coetzer: In danger of consignment to the "Where are they now?" files, feisty South African unseats No. 1 seed Davenport and No. 4 Monica Seles in Tokyo. Amelie Mauresmo: Fallout from her Australian Open coming-out party remains wildly positive. Let's see if her sponsors feel likewise. Australian Davis Cup Team: Fences supposedly mended, Mark Philippoussis is back on board, just in time for a rematch against Zimbabwe. AD OUT Petr Korda: While his positive test for steroids was bungled by the ITF, Czech star was banned for a year by his own country's tennis federation. Lindsay Davenport: After second three-set loss in a week, first American No. 1 since Chris Evert surrenders her throne. Yevgeny Kafelnikov: Frequent flyer/Australian Open champ falls to journeyman Dominik Hrbaty in Marseilles. Maybe now he'll treat himself to a week off. John McEnroe: During a compelling interview on Charlie Rose, Mac implies that men's tennis would surge in popularity if only the players were more obnoxious. To borrow a phrase from a certain gray-templed art gallery owner/aspiring rock star, "You cannot be serious!" Say, didn't you used to be Carlos Moya ? Question or comment for Jon Wertheim?
