Sort of like Thanksgiving Posted: Thursday November 25, 1999 09:44 AM
Once upon a time there were these people who lived in a foreign land. They felt persecuted, unable to make a good buck, so they decided to leave for America. Sort of like the Winnipeg Jets and the Quebec Nordiques did when they decided to go to Phoenix and Denver. There was an ocean voyage involved, so the persecuted people took a sailboat. Sort of like the Young America boat in the America's Cup, except it didn't split in half. The trip was rough, everyone getting knocked around -- sort of like Steve Young or Troy Aikman on a Sunday afternoon -- but the persecuted people finally landed in Massachusetts with a feeling of great hope and optimism. Sort of like Pedro Martinez or Drew Bledsoe or Rick Pitino. Waiting on the shore were some Indians, sort of like the Cleveland Indians, but without the wooden clubs in their hands. These were friendly Indians. Their leader, a chief, sort of like Elvis Grbac of the Kansas City Chiefs, suggested they stage a big party. The Indians cooked up some native birds, sort of like Atlanta Falcons or Auburn University War Eagles, but meatier. The persecuted people and the Indians ate the birds, which were very good, plus a lot of other food, sort of like an expense-account spread in a luxury box in the new Staples Center. "This is great, " the persecuted people said, sort of like George Steinbrenner after a ticker tape parade in October. "What next?" "All of our rowdy friends are coming over tonight" the Indians said, sort of like Hank Williams Jr. "Are you ready for some football?" And so it began. Happy Thanksgiving.
