We feel Marino's pain, really
Posted: Thursday December 09, 1999 06:51 PM
Dan Marino went into a little pout after the Miami Dolphins' 37-34 loss on Sunday to the Indianapolis Colts. Perhaps you saw it on television. He sort of snarled and stalked out of a press conference.
"These questions are ridiculous," he said. "I'll tell you how tough it is: You work your butt off all week and then you lose a game by three points with two seconds left. That's how tough it is. But you wouldn't know that, would you?"
I suppose some people might have seen a certain petulance in his remarks, but I am not one of them. In fact, I'm with Dan. Who are we to question a millionaire quarterback?
None of us has ever worked his butt off for an entire week and had anything except the sounds of trumpets and the cheers of the multitude at the finish. None of us ever has made the calls, answered all the questions, and still lost the sale, the account. None of us ever has showered and shaved, shined our shoes, only to be rejected by the girl when we asked her to the big dance.
We all attended our first choice of college. We all are doing work we really want to do, be it digging holes or typing letters or singing sad songs to sad faces in a Holiday Inn lounge. We all live exactly where and how we want to live. Our children do exactly as we say. Our health is great. Our prospects are endless.
Dan, you're exactly right. How could we ever know and appreciate your pain?
