Everyone has an angry Knight story Posted: Thursday April 13, 2000 07:59 AM
I was having lunch in the press room at Camden Yards in Baltimore last week when another sportswriter complimented me on a recent Sports Illustrated story on Bobby Knight. The story was a first-person account of a writer's tangle with the contentious Indiana University basketball coach, an odd little exchange of pleasantries. "Well, thanks," I said, "but that wasn't me. I didn't write that article. Another guy did. But, come to think of it, I did have my own little wrangle with Bobby Knight." I proceeded to tell my story, nothing big, just Knight yelling at me, acting pompous, doing his George C. Scott impression of General George S. Patton. When I finished, the other sportswriter proceeded to tell his tale, much the same, bluster and noise. And when he finished, a third sportswriter at the table proceeded to tell his story, again the same, a memorable afternoon of nastiness. Now, none of us has dealt with Bobby Knight much, since none of us is a college basketball specialist. I think my little confrontation came during my one encounter with the man. It's interesting, though, that each of us had a story. How many stories, total, do you think are out there? What would it be like to have to cover this guy every day? To have to work with him? Or to play for him? I guess we're finding out these days, aren't we? None of it seems very surprising.
