Congressman Osborne? That figures

So former University of Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne apparently is going to be a congressman. He won the Republican primary in the heavily Republican 3rd Congressional District in his home state on Tuesday by a lopsided margin, and seems virtually assured of winning the November election.

Isn't this great news?

Maybe Jerry Tarkanian can leave Fresno State basketball and become a congressman from California. Maybe former University of Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer can make Washington the site of a Big 12 reunion.

Maybe... how does Congressman Lou Holtz sound?

I don't know what you remember from Osborne's 25 years at Nebraska -- maybe you remember the three national championships and the 255 victories -- but I remember him ducking and weaving when the tough questions came from reporters. What's the deal with Lawrence Phillips, cleared to play after an assault charge? What's the deal with Christian Peter after that rape charge? What's the deal with a long list of Nebraska athletes on police blotters?

I remember Osborne, terse and piously expedient, most often taking the road that simply would keep that Big Red Machine rolling.

Now he's going to Congress. I suppose it figures, the piously expedient man joining a large body of piously expedient men, but I do wish that I hadn't read a story on the same day of the primary about a Nebraska linebacker, Mark Vedral, arrested on, yes, an assault charge.

It brings up too many cloudy memories.
