Hi mom, we're No. 115!
The preseason college football rankings are starting to arrive, and while it's interesting for me to report that Nebraska universally seems to be No. 1 and Florida State universally seems to be No. 2, it is more interesting for me to note that the University of Connecticut is universally ranked 115th and last among Division I-A schools. I went to the University of Connecticut. This presents some personal problems. I mean, what are you supposed to do when your alma mater is 115th out of 115? Are you supposed to argue with the wisdom of the pollsters, as I'm sure they're doing down in Gainesville, Fla., right now? ("A hundred and 15th, hey, we'll show them! We're a lot better than that!") Do you write out one of those fat alumni checks to the booster club to buy a few wide receivers or some steroids or maybe an annex to the weight room? What do you flash for the TV cameras, two fingers on one hand and five on the other? Won't people think you're saying seventh or 25th or something else? This is all new to me. UConn always has been a basketball school. This year is its first foray into the bigtime on the gridiron, the debut. The Huskies will play eight Division I-A opponents as they build toward a slot in the Big East in five or six years. I'll admit that I've always watched college football in the past with the bemused detachment of an East Coast guy, crazy people dressed up in red or as leprechauns, but hey, I can move with the times. Just tell me this: Do you still get to tailgate when you're 115th? Sports Illustrated senior writer Leigh Montville appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated.
