Merry Christmas to the rest of us
Merry Christmas to everyone who finished down the track from Tiger Woods in a golf tournament this year. An especially Merry Christmas to Ernie Els, who finished second about every other week. Merry Christmas to everyone who didn't sign a $252 million contract to play shortstop for the next 10 years. Merry Christmas to everyone not named Shaq, who didn't win an MVP award and an NBA title. Merry Christmas to the New York Mets, but not the New York Yankees. Merry Christmas to all the teams that didn't make it to the Big Dance last March. Better luck this year. Merry Christmas to the Buffalo Bills, who watched the Music City Miracle from the wrong end of the field. Merry Christmas to everyone who went to Sydney promising to bring back the gold and had to settle for the experience of a lifetime. Merry Christmas to that Lithuanian basketball team. Merry Christmas to all the coaches who were fired, to all the race car drivers who ran out of gas, to all the players who were named later. Merry Christmas to everyone who tore a medial collateral ligament or had something happen to his or her rotator cuff. Merry Christmas to the referees everywhere, to the timekeepers, to the people selling the peanuts and hot dogs and bobble-head dolls. Merry Christmas, in short, to the rest of us. Merry Christmas to you and Merry Christmas to me. Maybe we didn't win the championship this year, didn't make a million bucks, but we had our health and a few chuckles along the way and that was good enough. We developed a little more character.
