I'm a bona fide, certified 12-year-old Updated: Friday August 31, 2001 4:40 PM
I have called this news conference to reassure the sports public that I am only 12 years old. I collect Pokemon cards. I love to ride my bike. I am looking forward to the start of school next week. Seventh grade. Recent press reports that I was born on July 20, 1943 in New Haven, Conn., which would make me 58 years old, are total lies. I am a bona fide, certified 12-year-old kid. I was more than eligible to play for the Rolando Paulino Baby Bombers from the Bronx, N.Y., in the recent Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. I am big for my age. I will admit that. I also might look a bit older, but I attribute that to the ongoing stress from these accusations. Ask that congressman from California, that Gary Condit, about how intense media scrutiny can age a person in a moment. I am 12 years old. I think Britney Spears is the bomb. I don't like to clean my room. My favorite food is hot dogs. My favorite thing to do is hang out with my friends at the playground. I like A-Rod, *N Sync, video games and Scary Movie and Scary Movie II. It is a shame that cynicism and suspicion now surround a pure and low-key, nationally televised, primetime event like the Little League World Series. I truly wish my mom were around to set the record straight, once and for all. Alas, she passed away in 1983. Leigh Montville appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated.
