So you're Alex Rodriguez, richer than Midas, sitting at home and watching the baseball playoffs. So you're Ken Griffey Jr., same deal, money in your pockets, off where you said you wanted to be and ... oops, also home for the holidays. So you're Randy Johnson and maybe you're still at work in Arizona and maybe you're another fat cat, but think about it: Couldn't this have been a whole lot easier, a whole lot nicer?

Listen up, boys. Wouldn't you all really like to be with the Seattle Mariners in this particular baseball fall?

Hey, there's Lou Piniella, still at his post, fussing and fuming. And there's Edgar Martinez, same as always, just smiling and hitting any mistake that arrives at the plate. And there's Jay Buhner and there's all those rabid baseball fans from the Pacific Northwest, just going crazy at Safeco Field, and there's the best team in baseball, maybe the best ever during a 162-game season, and isn't this the most fun on the entire sports page?

The simple truth is that whole Seattle picture finally has come together and you -- all three of you, Alex, Ken Jr. and Randy -- could have been part of it. You could have been civic monuments. You could have been riding the ride of your lives. You decided to go the other way. You went for the bank account instead of the heart. You made the business decision.

Well, listen up, boys. You made a mistake. Money is money. Fun is fun. You gave up moments that no one can buy. No matter how much money he has.
